The rest of the night was slow, and we got everything cleaned up early. I texted Ian, but he didn’t text back. Trevor locked up.

“My ride isn’t supposed to be here until ten fifteen. Can you wait a few minutes?” I asked.

Trevor grimaced. “I can’t. I already told my girlfriend I was on my way.” Without waiting for me to respond, he got in his car and took off.

It was exactly ten, and Ian still hadn’t texted back.

I buttoned my jacket and put on my hat. My breath fogged out in the frigid night. Hopefully Ian would see my text and show up soon. I scanned the shadows, feeling exposed.

I went around to the back of the store and grabbed my bike, which was chained up by the dumpsters. When I started to wheel it around the front, I noticed it felt wrong. One of my tires was flat.

I bent down to look closer. There was a big gash in the front tire. It had been slashed.

My hands went clammy. I didn’t see anyone in the parking lot, but there were deep pockets of shadow where no light reached.

Lots of places for someone to hide.

I hurried to the front of the store and fumbled my phone out of my pocket.
